Understanding Gallbladder Cancer Surgery
The gallbladder is a small organ located beneath the liver, on the upper right side of the abdomen, and stores bile used in digestion. Gallbladder cancer (gallbladder ca) is frequently found incidentally — during surgery or imaging for what appeared to be routine gallstone disease. Because of this, our team treats every diseased gall bladder with careful attention, and if cancer is found or suspected, your case is reviewed by our full multidisciplinary tumour board before any further treatment is planned.
Depending on the stage, treatment may range from a straightforward removal of gall bladder (surgical removal of gall bladder / cholecystectomy) to a more extensive resection involving nearby liver tissue and bile ducts. Some patients are first found to have gall bladder polyps — also called gall polyps or gallstone polyps — on imaging; while most are benign, larger or multiple gall bladder polyps, or a porcelain gall bladder, are considered higher-risk findings that your surgeon may advise removing as a precaution.
