Understanding Gallbladder Cancer Surgery
The gallbladder is a small organ located beneath the liver, on the upper right side of the abdomen, and stores bile used in digestion. Gallbladder cancer (gallbladder ca) is frequently found incidentally — during surgery or imaging for what appeared to be routine gallstone disease. Because of this, our team treats every diseased gall bladder with careful attention, and if cancer is found or suspected, your case is reviewed by our full multidisciplinary tumour board before any further treatment is planned.
Depending on the stage, treatment may range from a straightforward removal of gall bladder (surgical removal of gall bladder / cholecystectomy) to a more extensive resection involving nearby liver tissue and bile ducts. Some patients are first found to have gall bladder polyps — also called gall polyps or gallstone polyps — on imaging; while most are benign, larger or multiple gall bladder polyps, or a porcelain gall bladder, are considered higher-risk findings that your surgeon may advise removing as a precaution.

About Gallbladder Cancer Surgery
Not always — it is sometimes discovered only after a routine gallbladder removal, on pathology examination. If this happens, our team will discuss next steps with you promptly.
No. Gallbladder cancer is uncommon relative to the number of gallstone cases, but any unusual symptoms or imaging findings should be evaluated by a specialist.
The stage of the cancer at diagnosis — how deep it has grown into the gallbladder wall and whether it has spread — determines whether a simple or extended surgery is needed.
Yes. Bring your existing reports and imaging, and our team will review them and discuss your options in detail.
Most gall bladder polyps — also called gall polyps or gallstone polyps — are benign and found incidentally on ultrasound. However, small gallbladder polyps that are growing, multiple gallbladder polyps, or a porcelain gallbladder are considered higher-risk findings that your surgeon may recommend removing as a precaution.
A blocked gall bladder duct or a distended gallbladder on imaging needs evaluation to rule out obstruction from stones or, less commonly, a tumour — your gall bladder dr will advise the right next step after reviewing your scans.
